I was relaxing, reading the the previously mentioned novel, when that quote popped up. For those who haven't read Divergent, firstly you should. Secondly, the quote is supposed to express the purpose behind a faction called "Dauntless", which is the faction that protects and values bravery above all other character traits.
While reading, and understanding the world found in Roth's novel, I started to question what character traits I value most. Bravery? Intelligence? Kindness? Honesty? Selflessness? Compassion? Creativity?
What do I value in other people?
I value honesty and self-reliance. I admire the selfless person who puts others needs before their own. I also value the ability to help others without compromising yourself. But if I had to choose just one, I too would choose bravery.
Without bravery to motivate us, so much is lost. Fear is a crippling moment, that holds us back and prevents us from doing whatever it is we wish to do, stops from achieving what we could have achieved. Without courage, there would be no democracy, no socialism, no Christianity, Islam, or Budhism. The defining moments of world history were determined by acts of bravery no matter how big or small. From helping the beggar on the side of the road, to moments of activism that have changed the world.
Be brave.
Totus tuus,
LeAnn
