Happy First week of Advent! Get those wreaths out, light that first candle and begin preparing for the birth of our Lord.
Today at mass with my family, we were led in two different songs that sang about "maranatha". The entire time during mass I was so confused...what is was, what does it mean? I was absolutely lost as to what it meant.
After mass, my mom had the same question, and then I was given the assignment of looking up what it meant.
Maranatha: Our Lord cometh;" - an expression used by St. Paul at the conclusion of his first Epistle to the Corinthians (xvi. 22). This word has been used in anathematizing persons for great crimes; as much as to say, "May the Lord come quickly to take vengeance of thy crimes." SeeAnathema maranatha , under Anathema.
That wasn't much help. Googling marantha just led to organizations and a Wikipedia page. And while Wikipedia has it's many uses, this was not one of them. Finally, biblestudytools.com gave me a usable answer.
Maranatha: ( 1 Corinthians 16:22 ) consists of two Aramean words, Maran'athah, meaning, "our Lord comes," or is "coming." If the latter interpretation is adopted, the meaning of the phrase is, "Our Lord is coming, and he will judge those who have set him at nought." (Compare Phil 4:5 ; James 5:8James 5:9 .)
So basically, it's one word saying that our Lord is coming. Perfectly applicable in regards to any Advent song. So, with that in mind, maranatha my loves. The Lord is coming, get ready. Go to confession, get back to mass, and say a few prayers.
Tutus Tuus,
LeAnn
